Lock the row that matters
Two people can submit the same action. The update is conditional: the row is still in the state that allows it. The second write finds it taken.

Read the plan
A query the product runs is checked with EXPLAIN before an index is declared a success. A plan that changes with real data is the one that counts.

Migrate while the day is running
Expand, then contract. Old code and new code can run against the table during the deploy. A lock that rewrites a hot table in one step is a failed migration.
