Version the contract
An API change expands first. Old callers keep working until they move. A breaking change on a Friday is a failed release, not a cleanup.

Bound the pool
Database connections and outbound HTTP clients have a ceiling. One slow dependency does not exhaust the pool for every other request.

Make failure local
A circuit breaker sits on the call that can stall. The rest of the service keeps answering. The open circuit is an alarm a person can see.
